LETTER REQUISITIONING SPECIAL MEETING OF ACADEMIC BOARD TO DISCUSS THE DIRECTION OF UCL AND THE VOICE OF THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY To the Secretary of Academic Board Professional Services 1 May 2017 We the undersigned, Call for a special meeting of Academic Board, under Statute 7(6) of UCL's Charter and Statutes. The third and final reading of the Trade Union Bill is in Parliament on Tuesday 10 November. The Trade Union Co-ordinating Group has called a protest in Parliament Square in the evening from 6pm. If you can't get to Parliament, you can write to your MP. 2. What is at stake? Currently, there is a great democratic imbalance between employers and employees. Employers need no democratic mandate to decide to hold down pay or make staff redundant. UCL did not ballot staff over its plans to change Statute 18, or over the Stratford Plan (UCL-East). Proposition passed at last Academic Board Special Meeting: This proposition was passed by an overwhelming show of hands at special Academic Board meeting – 21 Nov 2012 (separate votes were taken on (i) and (ii) and in each case there were only 3 hands against, and between 100 and 150 hands in favour). That the way forward, given the level of opposition displayed on Academic Board (24/10/2012) and the wider university to the current Statute 18 reform proposals, is: i. Dear Fellow Member of Academic Board, I am writing to you to ask whether you would consider reading and, if you agree, signing - by replying to me - the letter to Council about Statute 18 on behalf of members of Academic Board that is pasted at the bottom of this post.
